Have you ever wondered what has made our sand here so white? Our local beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world! How did the sand on our beaches get so white you might ask? According to local tales and magazines quartz crystals finely ground into sand flowed down from the Appalachian Mountains thousands of years ago. Over the course of time, the sands form protective dunes and barriers that we know as some, if not the most beautiful beaches in the world!
Ever wonder why the sand makes a squeaking noise? This is due to how finely ground the sand is, sand is a porous medium. As the sand rubs over each other the surface gets interlocked and when we step on it the bonds break and creates the noise. Sand, being a solid, makes it a good medium for sound propagation. The vibrations carry through the sand as we walk – step by step, making this wonderful sound that simply says, “welcome to paradise”!
